Transitional Year Residency Transitional Year (TY) residency programs provide one year of broad-based, well-balanced clinical rotations and education. The internship best prepares learners for future training in fields such as Anesthesia, Radiology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, PM&R, Radiation-Oncology, Neurology, Public Health, Military, Research, or Administration. Some trainees simply use the year to assist them in selecting the best career. There are over 1,000 TY positions offered annually. TY programs can be based at either Community or University hospitals, and are each sponsored by at least two accredited categorical programs. A Transitional Year internship is distinctly different from a Preliminary Medicine year. The TY curriculum is generally a little more broad-based and flexible, involving multiple disciplines. The national ACGME requirements ensure competency in training, but also provide the ability to tailor more rotations to individual needs. In addition, Transitional Year training offers financial advantages (over Preliminary Medicine) for teaching hospitals. TY programs use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please see below for a complete list of TY programs in the nation. CTYPD The mission for the Council of Transitional Year Program Directors is to:
